Dedicated to the memory of Dave Hemlin

David Hemlin passed away peacefully on the 12th March 2021, having bravely battled long term illness – he was a three times Lymphoma & Leukaemia survivor. Dave was loved by all, he had a passion for life and an emphasis on family and friendship - he was one of life’s best, a thoroughly good bloke and will be sorely missed by all that knew him. Always wearing a friendly smile, Dave was a kind man who made all feel comfortable and welcoming in any situation. Our lives are much richer for knowing him and we take comfort in having had Dave in our lives for so long, sharing great times and having created so many great memories with us all. Dave is survived by his Wife Jan, sons Jon and James; and Grandchildren Oliver, Lucas and Charles who invite you to donate to support two charities close to Dave and us – Anthony Nolan Trust and Lymphoma Action – both of whom do remarkable work saving and supporting blood cancer patients and their families.

Thoughts

Dave and I both attended the Royal Hospital School in Suffolk this school had been described as the Cradle of the Navy and All Our Fathers had been in the Navy we all lived in boarding houses that had been named after famous Admirals Dave was in St Vincent and I was in cornwallis my best friends were in St Vincent and I take this opportunity of also remembering Phil Pugh known as pug h and Rob Hunter we were in the same class and were not known for our academic prowess things however would different different on the sports field Dave played in the first team for rugby football and cricket he was an outstanding sportsman and buy a win on points beat me in the school boxing championship I however b o w l e d him out along with Phil in the inter house cricket finals cornwallis w o n Dave and Phil shared a flat together in Mill Hill North London and I live close by we all played football together with another old boy and great friend called Pat Horton all have all have passed away and I I'm the survivor it is all rather sad David had a great sense of humour and I remember the three of us went camping to a place called East Bergholt we arrived at dusk and pitched camp we had walked some distance and we're not aware of our surroundings I remember the next morning when David open the tent door to exclaim bloody hell that balls got knackers like tombstones we rapidly decamped we both continue to play rugby David for Mill Hill which he captained and me for the wasps 10th team sport was very important to us all I think my main memory of David was his good humour but he was also kind generous hospitable and a man of integrity he was a good man a loving husband 2 Jan and a wonderful father to the boys I guess in our own way albeit imperfectly we tried to follow Christ it is that's my belief that David is now with Christ and I really mean this he is now at peace and may we all thank God for his life

Sad to hear of David's passing, a distant cousin with our rather rare name, I looked forward to having a cold beer and discussing rugby vs hockey and bears together one day or another. Our correspondence was fun and allowed me to re-connect with family that had stayed in the UK. Our deepest condolences to Janet, Jon, James and their families at this time.
